Greetings and welcome to my "Web Portfolio." The concept of my Web Portfolio is allow you to see some of the work I have accomplished that does not lend itself to a more traditional medium (e.g. paper in a binder). Therefore, I have assembled several electronic media items here so that you can review them at home or in your office and in the manner in which they were meant to be seen. These items include web pages, computer generated annimations, and web based publications. I would like to begin this section with an electronic copy of my portfolio cover letter. The letter is in Adobe Acrobat format (If you need Acrobat click here to download and install it.). The next item is an electronic copy my vita. I use Acrobat for all of my syllabi so that the printed version my students generate from their own or a lab computer will look identical to my original. Electronic Publications and Instructional Materials The first item is the Aviation Science Institute web page. I have been responsible for the overall look, layout, and design of the ASI web page since I arrived at SOSU in the fall of 1998. I am responsible for the design and construction of all ASI web pages except for those of each particular faculty member. On my own ASI web page I have links to all of the classes I teach. These links allow students to access each class web page and see and print each class syllabus as well as any class notes and study guides. There are also links to other pertinent web sites. The links to the immediate left of this text will take you to the web sites dedicated to each of the classes that I teach. These are the classes that I regularly teach here at SOSU. The next item is a Flash animation project I created to help Dr. Gene Hetsel in some of his classes. The animation project depicts a generic four-cycle piston engine. Featured are the relationships between the position of the piston and the intake and exhaust valves. I have also developed two other Flash animation projects to explain the often confusing concepts of RADAR and the Air Traffic Control Beacon Side-Lobe Suppression System. Administrative Tools Academic advising is one of my regular duties. However, since there are four degree-options under the Aviation Management degree umbrella, as well as a Professional Pilot option and an Aviation Minor, things can quickly get confusing for both the advisor and the student. Traditionally, the ASI faculty all used printed degree plans to manually track each student's progress toward graduation. When a student was ready to graduate the student's advisor would then have to transcribe the student's personal information, and document all of the classes transferred from other institutions as well as any substitutions, onto a "Graduation Clearance Letter" which was to be sent to the Registrar. The advisor would also have to manually compute each student's GPA in their major for each clearance letter. This was a tedious and time consuming process. This process became even more troublesome when attempting to advise our students at Tinker AFB via phone or email. The task was made harder due to the fact that the Tinker student's files were on Tinker AFB and they have been advised by Dr. Conway, Sue Murphy and myself. Keeping track of substitutions and transfer credit was a nightmare. During the Fall 2002 semester I decided to try automating the advising process. By the spring, 2003 semester, after consultation with the Registrar, I had created an Excel spreadsheet for each major, minor, and degree option in the ASI. One of my main goals was not only to be able to use the spreadsheet as an advising tool by the faculty, but use it as the Graduation Clearance Letter for the Registrar. The spreadsheet format makes it easy to enter or change data, note substitutions, and automatically calculate in-major GPA. I also included pull-down menus for routinely entered data. Sue Murphy can use this tool at Tinker AFB and then simply email me the completed form for review. I can then print and sign it and forward it to the Registrar.
Publications Available Electronically I wrote an editorial, Plagiarism Requires Punishment, which appeared in the 17 January, 2003, issue of The Southeastern. (Note: My article is the third one down on the web page.) The editorial concerned the subject of plagiarism and the consequences of academic misconduct. Publications Outside the Aviation Field In the summer of 2002 I had an article called Consequences published in Free Inquiry magazine (Free Inquiry, Volume 22, Number 3). Membership I am a member of the following organizations:
Thank you for taking the time to look over my on-line web portfolio. I humbly solicit your consideration for promotion and tenure.
